Travel

While many bed-and-breakfasts have a certain charm to them, thanks to a limited number of rooms and personalized service, not all exude a romantic vibe ideal for couples. That’s why we’ve scoured hundreds of B&Bs in the United States to find those that are the most romantic of the lot, making them perfect contenders for an amorous getaway.

Captain’s House Inn, Cape Cod

The Captain’s House Inn is a historic property in Cape Cod with 16 elegant rooms decorated in an English country style. Since no children under the age of 10 are allowed, and most guests are couples, the atmosphere is romantic and quiet. The rooms mix traditional decor with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, and provide luxe touches such as fireplaces and soaking tubs. In addition to providing a gourmet country breakfast, this charming inn also offers afternoon tea, evening snacks, sweet treats, and port or sherry in the library. One outstanding feature is the heated outdoor pool with plush lounge chairs, plus in-room massages are available and guests can use beach chairs, towels, and coolers.

Sea Rock Inn, Mendocino

With its oceanfront setting and romantic air, the intimate Sea Rock Inn in Mendocino attracts peace-seeking couples. It’s an upscale bed-and-breakfast that doesn’t allow kids under 12, and offers suites and cottages with panoramic ocean views and wood-burning fireplaces. The pine-paneled cottages have freestanding wood stoves, while suites have four-poster beds and Keurig coffeemakers. Binoculars are provided for whale-watching from private decks or the large lawn, which slopes gently toward the edge of the rocky Pacific cliffs. The inn is not fancy, but is charming, with knotty pine furniture, ebullient flowerbeds, and whimsical paintings and sculptures.

Captain Lord Mansion, Kennebunkport

The Captain Lord Mansion, located an eight-minute walk from the center of Kennebunkport, Maine, is a small classic inn featuring Victorian-style rooms. Each room’s decor varies slightly, but all feature four-poster beds, numerous paintings, and antique-style Victorian furniture — cozy to some, gaudy to others — alongside modern amenities like iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. A free breakfast spread is served in a homey kitchen, and other freebies include Wi-Fi and bicycle rentals.

Cottage Grove Inn, Napa Valley

Cottage Grove Inn is tucked away on a leafy lot along Calistoga’s main street, a few blocks from the center of town. Each of the 17 individual cottages has a quaint porch with rocking chairs and a studio-like interior with skylights and a wood-burning fireplace. Bathrooms have cute paintings over whirlpool tubs, as well as separate showers. Unlike many area hotels, you won’t find mineral springs or a spa here, but in-room massages are available and free evening cheese and wine service is provided. Free breakfasts include yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, waffles, smoothies, and espresso drinks made-to-order.

Ho’oilo House, Maui

The only upscale bed-and-breakfast in Lahaina, Ho’oilo House is an adults-only bed-and-breakfast that provides an intimate, romantic alternative to the area’s busy chain hotels. With just six spacious rooms arranged around a beautiful common area that’s decked out in stunning, imported Balinese-style decor, this is about as opposite of a generic mega-resort as you can get. Room highlights include furnished patios and indoor-outdoor bathrooms that allow guests to shower under the stars. Although amenities are limited to a tasty, albeit limited, continental breakfast and a small, lovely pool, the experience here is less about action and more about relaxing and enjoying the great views of the ocean below.

Southernmost House, Key West

The adults-only Southernmost House occupies a historic Victorian home directly on the ocean and just off popular Duval Street. This 18-room inn feels sophisticated but laid-back, and has hosted the likes of Hemingway and Capote. Its genteel sitting porches, antique furnishings, and original Tiffany-glass entrance canopy connect visitors with old Key West, while the spacious, individually designed guest rooms offer modern comforts, such as flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. A free continental breakfast is served daily, and can be enjoyed on a lovely terrace. There’s also a lovely zero-edge pool overlooking the ocean.

It’s a lovely hideaway for couples, with individually decorated rooms and cottages offering cozy fireplaces, two-person tubs, and big glass showers. Some rooms have scenic patios overlooking the river. The inn has lots of distinctive touches, like a free, extensive homemade breakfast daily, thoughtful picnics prepared by the chef, and an oversized lawn chessboard, popular with local elk.

The peaceful grounds have beautiful landscaping, while the 1910-built inn showcases many original features, such as stone fireplaces and hardwood floors. The free multi-course breakfast is a highlight, and free drinks and homemade snacks are offered in the afternoon.

Its 19 individually decorated cottages all have a feel of understated, rustic elegance, with the comfort of modern amenities like Bose stereos, flat-screen TVs, and Nespresso coffeemakers. All units have working fireplaces, large bathrooms with separate walk-in showers and jetted tubs, and stunning design elements — one cottage has a helicopter shell that doubles as a living room. A fantastic and free breakfast, outstanding spa, and wonderful restaurant serving a tasty farm-to-table menu are just some of the standout features here.

Union Street Inn, Nantucket

Union Street Inn is a charming, elegant bed-and-breakfast that fits nicely with the Nantucket atmosphere. Downtown Nantucket is just a three-minute walk away, plus you’ll find a quaint furnished patio and cozy living room space on-site. The 12 lovely rooms vary in design, but all are sophisticated and outfitted with traditional touches. This is the only inn on the island to provide a full, hot breakfast (thanks to its commercial kitchen), and it’s delicious, as are the free homemade baked goods (brownies, cookies, and carrot cake) available daily.

Black Walnut Bed and Breakfast Inn, Asheville
